I grew up in Perth and graduated from All Saints’ College in 2016. In 2017, I began my undergraduate studies at The University of Notre Dame, studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary). I chose to complete my specialisation in Special Needs, as well as undertake the Accreditation to Teach Religious Education in Catholic Schools. I aim to graduate in December 2020.
So far I have completed 22 weeks of practicum experience as a pre-service teacher. I have gained extensive experience teaching in public, independent and Catholic schools with children of varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. I have spent a full 10 week term in both Year One and Year Six. Next year for my final internship, I plan to experience remote teaching in the Pilbara region.
I started working at Smart Achievers in 2018. Tutoring has given me the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that I have learnt at university and on my practicums. I enjoy tutoring English the most, especially working with the Smart Words spelling program. When tutoring English and mathematics, I like to follow the Gradual Release of Responsibility model: ‘I do, We do, You do.’ After identifying a concept that a student is struggling with, I model for them the correct way to answer it. We then do another example together where I guide them, and then I watch and provide feedback as they complete more examples independently. During this process, I also focus on the process and skills that they need to follow and use to answer a question.
